I got a NOS 175 dual twin emblem for my sidecover, and was wondering what the cleverest way to rivet it on is? blind rivet would be easy, but cant seem to find brass ones. Any recommendations would be appreciated

Get the rivets from Richard. I installed mine by using a two-part epoxy. Just push rivet through and secure on the backside with the epoxy. It's not going anywhere.

I tried to get spare rivets from Richard a couple weeks ago and he didn't have any spares, only those he includes with the emblems. I am concerned about replacements if I take the emblem off my 350 to repaint. The existing ones are smashed on the backside and won't be reusable. The rivets are hollow, with a hole all the way through, so in a pinch , they could be made with small brass tubing from a hobby shop. You'd have to grind a punch to flare the outside end into a head without splitting it, to make it look like the original. I've not tried that, it may not be easy to get it right. There are probably some rivets available somewhere, but finding them may be nearly impossible.

Didn't your badge come with rivets? The one's Richard sells include the rivets. Might check with your supplier to find out where your rivets are. Just a thought.

The rivets Richard includes are .076" dia. and the head is .132" diameter. The holes in the emblems are .086" dia.
If you can't find rivets, one option that doesn't give an original look is to find small brass screws in a hobby or craft store, grind the heads until the slot is gone and the head is flat or slightly rounded, then put a nut on the back side. You'll be able to tighten them by using pliers on the threaded end if they want to spin.

thanks for the replies gentlemen. Since I already have the emblem, and it doesn't seem like rivets can be had by themselves, I ordered some 2mm brass tube and will try to make some. Karl is right, the hole in the emblem is .086" so if the rivets are .076" (I trust ya Karl), then i'm thinking .0787" tubing should be close enough (if not, then I'll break out the needle file :)) I'll let ya all know how it turns out.

I have a jar of old aluminum rivets ( some aviation application?) that I used when working on Vespa and Lambretta restorations but have no idea where they are. I think the rivets are re-made for the Vespas these days.

Okay, slowly getting the bike back together. Since I had the emblem and didn't have enough foresight to get them from Richard with the rivets, I had to come up with an alternative. I picked up a pack of brass linoleum nails at lowes for $1.49 and made them look pretty close. Since the nail heads were domed, I drilled a 2mm hole in some steel plate, inserted the nails, and hammered the heads flat (and bigger) this kept the heads relatively round. I then drilled holes in the heads just deep enough to make it look hollow. I fastened them on the back using a drop of lead solder (I laid the side cover on a couple frosty cold wet rags to dissipate the heat and was quick about it)

I have made some other progress as well. New tires mounted, chrome cleaned up a bit etc. I had to paint the tank as the chrome was so bad it would make my knuckles bleed. I made what was chrome metal flake silver. This is my rattle can tank with 2K clear on it: (Photo is pretty crappy)

I'm pretty happy with it for my first attempt and being duplicolor spraycanned. Better pictures to come when I get everything mounted on the bike.

2K clear is definately the way to go for amateur painters. It sprays really nice and is supposed to be gas-proof. we shall see..............

You're doing a great job there. Looks like you do things the hard but cost effective way, like me, more satisfaction when it comes out right. ;D :D ;D. Who makes 2k clear and which Duplicolor did you use for the red on the tank and panels. I'm in UK. Brian.

Thanks! There are major warnings on the internet about using special respirators or air tanks when using 2K paint, but for a motor cycle tank and a couple side panels in an open garage, i just used a p95 dual cartridge respirator from Harbor Freight and wore long sleeves and nitrile gloves. No issues.
