The parts manual says that 5 of these spring protectors are needed and that all 5 are the same since there is only 1 part number for them.
I'm assuming that each carb uses 2 springs.... 1 for the throttle & choke cables together and the other for the fuel lines. That accounts for 4 springs.
Is the 5th. one for the tachometer or the clutch cable?
Looking thru the 350 gallery, I see some on the tach cable, but only on the GTO's.... none on the GTR's. The other confusing thing is that the one on my tach cable is 10 inches long vs. the others which are 6 inches long.
From the pics I've posted below, you'll also see that the gap between the spring loops is larger than the regular springs, so they're probably 10 inches long as well. If this is how they were produced, there should be a separate part number for this longer spring..... but there is none.
Is this the 5th. spring that's just been stretched out?
Who stretched them.... factory or previous owners?
Where's the 5th. spring on the GTR's?

I too have damage here on my GTR. I have also wondered about the 5 springs, currently I have the choke, throttle and oil pump cable in one spring on RHS and choke and throttle in one spring on LHS.
No spring on tacho cable, perhaps the spring was to do with the tight route the GTO cable took around the exhaust? I do t have a GTO to check...yet ^-^

Ryan, I forgot about the oil pump cable, which like you said would make it 3 cables into 1 spring for the right side carb.
I'm starting to think that the longer spring on the GTO tachometer cable is in fact a different part and should have it's own part number.
If that is indeed the case, any experts out there have the missing part number? popcorn

I've never liked these springs on the 350s, they chew into any parts they happen to touch including the cables inside. This is one area where I was prepared to compromise on originality, their downsides outweigh the benefits.
However, two are essential, one either side, on the carb/oil pump cables to hold them together and keep them off the hot cylinder like Hardy says above. I've removed all the others, fuel lines can be routed to avoid the hot cylinder and exhausts on the GTO. I have sleeved the fuel lines with clear silicone rubber tube where there was any possibility of them touching the exhausts ( mainly left side)
The GTO came with a longer spring on the tacho cable, again to keep the cable off the high level exhaust.
Mike, I'm reasonably sure BS just stretched a standard 6'' spring to achieve this. This has been removed and a length of silicone tube now provides the heat protection and is a lot kinder to the parts it touches.

PS, just counted the coils on the short/longer springs - 37/38 on both.
