Thinking of buying a hs175!!
« on: October 02, 2011, 12:36:08 AM »
Met a local guy who owned a Yamaha/ Honda dealer since the sixties! Anyway hes got several old bikes but 2 in particular that caught my eye are a Yamaha yl1-e and the Bridgestone 175. Its in decent shape, maybe a 6/10. Im planning on possibly rebuilding the engine and possibly doing other restorations to it. Think these old 2stroke twins are really neat and Im likely going to get it for a price of $550. Just wondering if anybody could let me know if thats a good deal? Sounds fair to me. Doesnt run right now but has decent compression. Also the Yl1-E is in good condition and he want same price for it. Let me know what ya think. Any help is appreciated!

EBG    Its difficult to give a value without pictures.  Prices are all over for that model.   Look over the chrome and paint.

The chrome is always the first thing to go and is expensive and time consuming to redo.  Obviously you want to look the engine over well and check compression with a gauge, ect.

I would not jump in blindly at that price.  Get us some pictures.

It always comes down to a personal decision in the end.  Good luck.

Go for it!  They are a blast to ride. You said you have good compression. The carbs are easy to work on and clean, new points/cond will run you 50 bucks, battery is 50, new plugs 4 bucks. You could have that engine running for 104 then spend the money on new tires/tubes and other stuff you need to have a safe motorcycle.

If you look closely, I think its a 200, not a 175...look at the two notches on the cylinder cooling fins. Could be even better. Check the bottom of the cylinder cast at it has the cc's cast into it. Great price for a fun running bike.
