200 RS oil pump
« on: September 25, 2011, 11:32:59 PM »
Getting a 200 RS back on the road.  I've been running pre mix the last day or so but figured I would fill up the oil tank.  The bike has been sitting for 21 years and I want to make sure I have the pump set up right. I adjusted the oil pump cable so I have the proper gap at the stop, cleaned the oil tank and installed a new oil line. Anything else I should check?  Do I need to prime the pump?  I've got some good quality ester based oil that I used in my 2 stroke dirt bike, is that ok to use in the Bridgestone?

Another thing, how do you know how much oil you have in your gear box?  I drained it and put the required amount in but don't see a dip stick or a sight glass.

Thanks pb

It sounds to me like you've done the necessary checks on the oil pump, but the best thing to do is leave some premix it it, then fire it up and let it idle while holding the oil pump wide open.  You should shortly have a lot of smoke coming out of both pipes.  Now you're certain you have all the air out of the lines and the pump is working.

The transmission oil check is a small 6mm bolt screwed into the clutch cover, just behind the right side carb cover.  You remove the bolt and fill the transmission until oil runs out the hole.

Great advice about holding the pump wide open...the smoke will give me the confirmation I was looking for.  Also thanks for the tip about the tranny, I'm going to run this oil for a few days then drain and refill the way you described.
