Petcock gasket??
« on: September 16, 2011, 04:43:34 PM »
Cleaning up a 1970 200 RS, I have spark and compression now I need to feed the carbs.  My petcock was totally stopped up. I took the selector lever off and found the problem....packed gunk. My parts diagram does not go inside the petcock but it looks like their should be a rubber seal/gasket between the lever and the 3 holes in which the fuel is off, reserve or primary.  It looks like it should be 2-3mm think and have 3 holes for the fuel the pass thru.  Can anyone confirm that gasket?
Thanks pb

Yes, your are right,

Behind the tap lever on the original tap is a cork disc with 4 holes in it (note - cork, not rubber). If you are careful, you may be able to remove that disc with a pointed hook, but be careful as it is easy to split the cork. You may then be able to clean all the dead rats and spiders out of the fuel taPp passeages. If the disc comes out and it's in good condition, you could try gently facing it on some fine abrasive paper and then refit it and gently tighten the brass lever retaining collar to provide enough pressure to seal.

Alternatively, Honda had a similar arrangement on soem of their early taps with a 4-hole rubber washer. There were two different sizes, the smaller of which can be used in the BS tap in place of the original cork disc. I believe that there were two sizes - one for the CB72/77 and one for the CB160/CD175 - but I can't remember which was which and I believe they are no longer available as spare parts. If you have any buddies with early Hondas, you could always ask them.

 I hope that helps!

Graham

O man, when I opened the tap I thought that it was clogged with debri which the holes were but the tan cork gasket and the debri were the same color so I cleaned everything out. But I have a CB160 I'll take apart that petcock and may be I will get lucky.

In the mean time I rigged up a small temp tank and was able to fire up the bike, sounded great! First time it has roared to life in 21 years.

Hey steve,
Here is a pic of my fuel tap.  Hope you have something that can help.  I pulled the tap off my CB160 and it does have a 4 hole gasket but it must be the larger of the options, several mm too big to fit.  Too bad because it is in good shape.  Let me know if you need more info, the opening is 17mm.
Thanks pb

Ray Oliver in Ireland has kits for your fuel tap

ttp://www.redimport.net/bridgestone/parts/175-350_Fuel_Tap_Repair_Kits.htm

They are not cheap @ $60 - I think Richard Clark may have new Fuel Taps (petcocks) for less than the kit
