working on first parts order, 200RS
« on: August 05, 2011, 06:51:51 PM »
So I'm looking up some part numbers and I have found some reference questions like (before or after 16K or 16G). I have found 2 ID's on the bike both say TA2-and 6 numbers.  In reading the frame and serial numbers guide on this site it seems I need to find something that starts with (23-letter-5 numbers)  That will give me the month code I need.  Where do I find that?  It seems in 1970 they started putting a CHP plate on the steering neck, thats where I found the 1970 and the TA2#'s but don't see any (23-?-?????) info.  Did they do away with that ID since everything was spelled out on the steering neck? If not can someone point me where I should be looking?
Thanks pb

I believe you need "after 16".  Before "16" is for early models.

I am running out the door so maybe someone else can chime in on your question.

Give us all of the numbers you have.  Steering neck and plate.

There should be a small plate on the right side of the bike frame towards the top of the rear fender. There is a small flat spot were it went

It is to the rear of the battery and ahead of the right seat bolt.   If it is gone, look for evidence of where two small rivets were which held the plate on.

The plate could have fallen off or was removed at one time for painting. As I said, the "before 16" parts should NOT be for your bike.  Hope this helps.

Got it, the plate was exactly where you said it would be. Thank you!
It says 23L-05314
So the parts manual says after 16L for my points/cond.....I assume 23L means I'm way after 16L and I use the later points/cond?

Who ever owned this bike was very "creative", he made the dynamo gasket out of the plastic top of a crisco container, one of the exhaust manifold gaskets was made out of aluminium foil.  Lots of wires were twisted together and sealed with duct tape.  Home made header to muffler gaskets, looks like it he may have used a cut up intertube.

While I have you, I was adjusting the oil pump stop gap and the adjuster screw broke in half.  I was able to get the broken half out of the side case but the adjuster part will not slide off the end of the cable.  Does that mean I need to buy a new cable?  Most of the time an adjuster of this type will slide down off the cable.

thanks pb

Numbers that start with 16 were the 175's. Numbers that started with 23 were 200's.

You do use the later points and condenser.

If the rest of your throttle cable is good I might be able to come up with just the lower part of the cable that goes to the pump.

Scrambler,
The rest of the throttle cable is good.  I looked at it again yesterday and the ball at the end of the cable will not allow the adjuster to slip out.  Is it possible to clip the ball off, slide a new adjuster on and recrimp the cable?  Just had a thought, haven't taken apart the upper end of the cable does the adjuster slide down from the top?  I'm open for ideas, I'm sure you've got some. I read your ice racing post and watched all the videos. Very cool, would love to try something like that.

No the adjuster cannot be taken off from the top, the cable sheathing gets in the way.

I have the cable sitting here if you need it. Sheathing is cracked but it works.

Last night I sent our host an email with a list of must have engine part numbers.  I want to hear the engine run before I replace all the cables.
Once I hear it run I'll replace all the stuff thats needed to move down the road.
