I'm basing my answer from memory since it's been a long time to be on a 175, so I'm not sure about the key position, but it should kick start even if in a gear - but best to have the clutch in then. Otherwise if you know it's in neutral (light on) no clutch engagement is required. If you're going try a rolling start, probably best to be in 2nd gear when you pop the clutch out.

it should start in neutral with the clutch in or out. I'm just guessing,  but I would think that having the key turned to either the first or second detent would allow spark to happen. Oh, but I think many models of BS need to have a battery connected as they don't have a magneto (spark generator) like many other makes of motorcycle. You could test that with a spark plug pulled out to test the battery requirement.

So I can start it in neutral without the clutch in, and where can I put the key at 1st 2nd or 3rd knotch!

I appreciate all the help you can give!

I think the 350 & 175 ignition switches are similar.
The first click allows the engine to run, but without the headlight on.
The second click turns the headlight on.
I can't remember the third position's function.
So the first or second click should work.

Third position is "park" - tail light bulb on, but nothing else.  Apparently for when you try to run too far on reserve and have to park on the shoulder and walk to the nearest house for gas.   :)
