It sure looks like your trying to cover all the bases. Old saying for starting,"you have to stick to the facts". F is fuel. A is air; is it getting in and out unobstructed? C is compression; very important,do you have any? T is timing. S is spark; is it bright blue and not dull or orange? Poor spark, along with poor compression can be a killer. Keep us informed. Mark.

Maybe back to fuel. Is it flooded? Are you sure about the timing?

and you've already put in new spark plugs? but if it sputters when you put gas directly in the carb, sounds more like a fuel delivery problem.

Just a thought:

When you are trying to start it and you use the enrichener (choke) lever, do not open the throttle. If you do, it defeats the purpose of the choke.

haven't got it to run yet. i think the gas tank may have some more rust that is clogging it up. going to redo the acid wash and see if any comes out. thanks for all your help. i'll let you know if it starts after the acid wash gets done and i get the tank on again.

with the tank off, don't you probably have a foot or so of gas lines leading to the carbs? you could fill those up and see if it will run for 15-20 seconds with fresh clean gas going in. I have an old hyperdermic needle that I use for things like that, or draining a mower's gas tank dry in the fall.

i have got it to start, but it wont stay running unless i keep goosing the throttle, but eventually it will die like it is out of gas. i can choke it and start it right back. the exhaust on the left side is getting hot, but the right side isn't. some smoke comes out of the right side but a lot more comes from the left

Still sounds like a fuel related problem as long as you know you have constant, good spark. Looks like you've got good fuel flow from the tank, petcock and lines. Have you checked both carbs for fuel inlet /needle obstruction or sticking? Floats set right?
