Yes there is. i don't know the cutoff but the early early motors have a different shift drum and some of the gears are different. If i remember the shift dawgs are different between on the gears.

Does anyone know the actual difference between the following shift drum part numbers:

2502-8000
2502-8001
2502-8002

I'm looking for the part number that is for the drum with the shift detent (the floweret looking thing) that is removable. I just tried to take one apart and the end of the drum broke off. I have one that I removed the floweret, but don't know which motor it came out of

Thanx   paul

This question came up again. I'm wondering if anyone with 175/200 stuff has any shift drums with a 10mm head bolt as opposed to a Phillips head screw? I have two with the bolt head but I don't know what motors they came out of. The cam is removable on the ones with the bolt head.

I have 2 complete 175 motors. 16J from May 1966 and 16J from October 1966. They are different but I'm not sure about the shift drums. Ill look at both tonight and post my findings here.

I probably have close to 25 175/200 motors and only two shift drums that the cam is separate (that is with a bolt head vs phillips head). I plan on checking more of the ones that just have phillips head to see if there is the machined ridge. That might indicate the cam unbolts.

Both of mine have the phillips head screw. Both built in 1966 - May and October.
