different 2 stroke fever
« on: December 12, 2008, 01:08:04 PM »
In a different manner, I've added to my 2 stroke collection. In the fall my wife got a new Yamaha Vino 50cc scooter. So to be on par with her, last weekend I bought a 1982 Honda MB5 motorcycle. I think it needs the fuel system cleaned out and a fuel filter added, it only runs for a few seconds each try. I'll try to not let it delay the resurrection of my GTR.

I like other tilders too, have a Yamaha Zuma 50cc scooter, however have installed a 75cc top end, came with
new carb, head, cylinder, piston and rings, used stock quiet muffler.  Now then machine is FUN ;D   Top end with me 220lb
before was about 40mph now it is around 55 with MUCH stronger take off, now the machine is rideable and so much fun

I love the small  two strokes as well.  They're so agile it's almost comical to  ride something that handles like a bicycle yet  will go 60 mph.  I've rented the scooters on  vacation and they're fun, but I like the  bigger tires of the 90 for handling and  sweeping around the in  town corners.  Honda made a 4 stroke small bike repli racer a few years back that looked like a lot of fun.  Not sure what displacement it was but I think  it was DOHC and a single.  Too expensive though, around 5 thousand I  think.

I like the ride of the larger wheeled bikes too. Her Vino will do 40 mph, but I didn't want to follow her on the GTR. And it seems most of the older mopeds won't come close enough to 40 mph. From what little I've read it sounds like I could put a 70cc piston and head on the 50cc block of the MB5 (should the current top-end be bad). Or a certain Honda 100cc engine is supposed to fit with the relocation of one engine mounting bolt ;D

sputtering to life
« Reply #6 on: March 28, 2009, 08:06:36 PM »
2 weeks ago the MB-5 showed some life. After 3 short bursts running off the shots of model airplane fuel, it sustained the 4th attempt and I rode the neighborhood verifying the tranny works fine. The local used bike shop owner I got a battery from said my next problem is because I was running it w/o the air filter in place. He says they're sensitive to mixture settings. Haven't verified that yet since last week was a vacation and now we're getting more snow (forecast is 3-5"  :'( )

Got to see his back room area. Had to research the net to see exactly what it was, but he has an '83 Honda 650 Turbo there. He said it was originally donated to a tech school by Honda and didn't come with a title. Otherwise I might have considered a 4 stroke in the stable.
