350 Dynamo Rebuild
« on: February 18, 2014, 09:00:15 PM »
Bridgestone Brotherhood, I have another dilemma. (What else is new?)  ;D
I just tore the best of my dynamos down. The outer bearing is very gnarly. The parts catalog only shows external parts and the entire assembly. If someone else has done this overhaul, I would be very interested in bearing and seal part numbers and suppliers (OEM or otherwise) that were used. I have asked Richard for parts, but not sure he will have them.
Is there another manual that details how to rebuild the dynamo?
How have others cleaned and refinished the steel coil retaining case?
Given the availability of bearings and seals, this should not be impossible (hopefully) since in my case it is unavoidable.
Any pointers or advice would be appreciated as usual.
Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken the GTR uses the same dynamo assy (EN09/EN11) as the Kawasaki A1/A7 models with engine-speed dynamos. The Great Kawasaki A1 and A7 Parts Catalogue has exploded views of the various dynamos used plus the Kawasaki part numbers for the individual parts. The bearings are listed as 6201ZZ on the contact breaker side and 6202 on the drive side; the oil seal is listed as an SB22357 i.e. 22 mm inner diameter, 35 mm outer diameter and 7 mm width. As the bearings and oil seal are probably available from your friendly bearing shop I won't quote the Kawasaki part numbers- and they are probably "No Longer Available" from Kawasaki anyway.
Hope this helps.

Painted casings or cleaned up and polished, I finally went for the latter.

Hi Bert,
I have done similar to ziggy with the polished casings but I wire mopped the coil until it shone and lacquered that too, however I might change it to a black finish as well, not sure how I will leave it.
Colin.

Thanks for posting this Gerrit...... it might come in real handy when I finally get around to restoring mine.

Thanks to all for the help, as usual. I have found bearings, but am still trying to locate the seal. Got my magnifiers out a it is a 19x35x5.5...so far looks like an odd size, so a x5 0r x6 might work out. Also heard from Ricahard. He has new, so waiting for a price to decide what to do. The internals of mine (outside the cozy comfort of the primary drive case) ARE NOT PRETTY! Such is the life of a BSer...heavy sigh.

If anybody is interested I can scan the exploded view drawing and the list of part numbers from the A1/A7 Parts catalogue and mail them. There may be a few detail differences to accommodate the differences in the engine design but the drawing may be handy regardless.
