Title: Right Side Oil Seal Replacement
Post by: hankgood on April 11, 2019, 08:48:57 AM
I have the same symptoms as this post in the New Members Forum and asked a few questions there:

https://bridgestonemotorcycleparts.com/index.php?topic=496.0 (https://bridgestonemotorcycleparts.com/index.php?topic=496.0)

After my first ride yesterday, I have to repair this before I can ride - it's smoking like crazy on the right side. Also have crankcase oil dripping down inside the case below the carb mount. Running 40/1 Yamalube premix without any oil in the injection system and the left muffler is showing hardly any smoke.

Would appreciate input on any parts needed other than those listed below and repair tips before I start:

2183-8000 - Crank Case Cover Gasket
09066-103 - 100 O-ring (RDV Cover)
09066-104 - 23 O-ring (Carb Mount)
09090-109 - 28 Oil Seal (Crankshaft)
09090-112 - 18 Oil Seal (Kick Starter)

Thanks

Does Richard have new seals or are they NOS from the late 60's?

I received two 28mm x 47mm x 7mm oil seals (type TC) today planning to stacking them. It became quickly apparent that they would be too wide. My thinking was that installing two seals stacked would work against the two-directional pressure issue.

Measuring the clearance (should have done that before ordering) I only have 11mm clearance between the gear installed and the Rotary Disk Valve splines.
Got the original seal specs from an earlier post:

The seal is 28mm ID x 47mm OD x 15mm W.  It is also a double sealing lip (not a sealing lip and a deflector lip).  It has to seal crankcase pressure one direction and transmission oil the other direction.

Apparently I have the wrong dimensions or some other issue - any insight before I order more seals will be greatly apreciated.

Have been able to find 5mm, 10mm and 11mm wide type TC in the correct sizes.

Why not just order correct  seals from Richard?  Jeff Bar

Two reasons:

I would love to use Richard's parts but getting a reply to an email request for parts takes weeks - I'm anxious to move forward.

I'm concerned that NOS Bridgestone rubber oil seals are 50 years old and might not retain their integrity. Would appreciate any expert input on this matter.

Thanks

I've always been happy with Richards service and sometimes he takes a while to get back to you but this isn't his full time job and he's busy with his work so patience is the best way as for the seals and l've had plenty with no problems at all why use something that's not right my advise is wait for the correct product from Richard it'll be worth it and it'll be right. And very often in fact mostly l get a reply the first day if not within a couple of days.

I've always received excellent service from NOS parts, including oil seals.  Sitting in normal storage seems to have little effect on oil seals.  I think it's the high temperatures and friction from extended use that causes them to eventually harden and fail.

Agreed. I've had good results with NOS seals. The NOS ones I have around for spares feel just like new.

Went ahead with two 28mm x 47mm x 5mm oil seals (type TC) stacked with the springs mounted outward. The fit was perfect. Also replaced the RDV cover 100mm o-ring, the small inside o-ring and the o-ring that seals the RDV carb mount to the engine casing.

Working like a charm – took my first five mile ride and she ran great with no "extra" smoke. Nice to finally be on the road.

You'll have to let us know how this works out over the long term.   If you're concerned about the quality of vintage NOS seals, the factory size 28/47/8 DC (dual spring) seals are available, sometimes in Viton.  I've used the NOS seals from Richard on my 350 and they've been perfect.  Glad to hear you were successful.  Keep us posted!
