Clutch push-rod question

The clutch push-rod on my '67 GTR has one end that is slightly narrower (tapered) than the other end. My question is: Which way does it go into the engine; narrow end first, or just the opposite? Thanks in advance!

I believe the small end goes toward the clutch. There is also a 6mm x 10mm dowel that goes in first (may still be in there) and there is 1/4 inch ball that goes in the clutch mechanism that the push-rod sits on.  See the 350 parts manual available for download from this site. If either the dowel or the ball are missing, you'll know because you won't be able to adjust the release correctly.
