I have had luck heating the rubber top with a heat gun and using a lubricant
to slid the oil line thru the top. Be careful not to over heat the rubber.

Good luck.

For the air filter, I use a 1/4" or thicker sheet of air filter foam cut a little larger than the screen (guaze) bracket, stuck around the edges to it with contact cement, oiled, then jammed into the filter housing. I wouldn't just use the screen, it won't stop fine particles. It originally was flocked with some filter-like material which deteriorated and fell off.

Another way to insert the oil pump cable (but more labor intensive) is to dismantle the cable splitter and feed the cable in from the bottom of the carb rubber. This avoids having to force the cable adjuster through the rubber. Splitter top will pop off with a bit of gentle levering.
Unspoiled by progress.
I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s & 70s. I did so much stupid stuff and there's no record of it.............Anywhere !!

I would use a hairdryer on high. Heat gun can get way too hot.

Thanks for your advise. Dismantling the cable splitter popped into my head during the night and ive got some sheet filter foam that i can cut to size.cheers
