clubman or drag bar installation
« on: February 01, 2011, 10:19:11 PM »
Are there any easy solutions to installing different bars?  So far,  I am looking to cut up a spare set of bridgestone bars to retain the throttle mounting and fab my own clubman style bar.

Have a look at the 90 Bridgestone that Subrew has done i know that he can help you with your H bars!
Thanks.
Steve.

He used a conventional 7/8 diameter bar (altered clamps, I guess) and external throttle cable design, etc.  I was hoping for a simple swap and not rework the whole assembly.

I am going to try and retain the Bridgestone cables (or thats the plan).  The easiest design, for me, would be to modify and section the standard Bridgestone bars into a Hyde style 'M' bar.  This will require splitting the throttle end and realigning it so everything is oriented similar to stock.

I am going to simply duplicate the drag bars (as shown in the optional parts catalog).  I think they will do nicely, and I will set the length at a good measurement to accommodate the existing stock cables.  Once finished (if it works well) I will post pics.

Well I was going to go for a simplified drag bar, but with our killer tubing bender, I went ahead and experimented with a Norman Hyde M bar style.  It came out great, we machined the thottle slot too.

I ended up clearancing the the clutch handle housing so the light and horn wiring could run externally.  the housing already had a mold line, as if production parts may have went either way.

I had to go a tad wider (28-29 total width) because i did not want to really crank the old cabling too sharply and cause those sort of issues.  Not wanted with with 45 year old cables!!

they turned out well.  The next step is a nice bubble seat.  here are two pics.  I have adjusted the widths a touch, since this pic, narrowing them by 3/4".

I used just a generic 7/8" clubman bars on the BS90.  I had the throttle assembly already from pile of spares, so it was easy setup for me.

I did make a set of bars similar to what you are mentioning for a little Honda C110 project I have.  Cut them in the middle, narrowed, and re-welded.  I mounted them in a set of generic Honda bar clamps:

These are mounted very low on purpose, since this bike is built to a set of rules for Bonneville. But a setup like these could easily be mounted in the stock BS bar clamps.

So with the 7/8th bars did you machine the stock clamps? BTW That bike looks fantastic have you run at Bonneville yet?

Yep, I just opened them up to 7/8".  I had a spare set that wasn't very pretty, so I modified those.  Left the clean ones original.
