fuel lines
« on: July 29, 2010, 08:16:11 PM »
1/4 inch fuel line doesn't work for the GTR fuel fittings.
I was a little skeptical about it being the proper size when I took the old fuel petcock into the Yamaha dealer and told him I needed fuel line to fit. This spring I installed it and thought maybe it was going to work after all.
Today I rode it to work, went out in early afternoon to show the bike to a dirt bike fan. As I'm kick starting it he points out the gas running out the right side carb cover drain. A bit later I go back out and pull the cover off and turn on the fuel supply. Immediately I see the fuel leaking around the line end at the top of the carb. After a trip home with fuel splattering on my right foot, I know that I need to find a smaller metric fuel line.
And with the luck being the way it has lately, I see that the leaking right side has a carb drain that exits right on top of the muffler, but the left side is inset more and drips onto the frame.

Thanks Steve,
I might need to do that, but yesterday I saw why they sold me 1/4" line last year.
My "original" petcock on the bike actually has 2 different size nipple outlets.
They used the larger one to size the fuel line.
But now I might have to do another mix, because the aftermarket petcock I installed is 1/4", but the carb inlet is something else.
Glad it's raining out, otherwise I might feel like I'm missing out on some quality riding time.
And it doesn't run as good as it should when you can look at the clear fuel line and see all the air bubbles getting in just above the carbs.

I just put some vinyl tubing that I purchased at ACE hardware on my GTR and it was a tight fit but it worked fine. It is 3/16" ID ... 5/16" OD tubing. I heated the ends a little to soften it up to help slide it on the fittings. This is clear tubing which is nice because you can see if you actually have some fuel going down it.
I have a tilt wheel for more headroom!

Vinyl tubing gets hard pretty fast, but it won't get brittle and fall off.  It's cheap, so it costs little to replace. The downside is if you need to take it off, it may be so hard you have to replace it instead of reusing.

That's good to know.  I bought 25 ft of decent fuel line last year, which will last me quite a while, but it is transparent blue.  If I want black or another size, now I know where to get it. It is hard to find when a guy needs some.
