Title: GTR Fender Mystery
Post by: Kenneth Pagel on May 06, 2021, 01:24:10 PM
I recently sent my GTR front fender and air cleaner housing out for polishing, being that one is stainless (the fender), and the other aluminum. Imagine my surprise when I picked up the parts to be told my front fender is chrome, not stainless! The polisher stated that he polished the fender a bit (removing many fine scractches present) but didn't want to go futher for fear of damaging the plating. Some time ago, I confirmed on this site that the GTR (and GTO?) front  fenders were stainless, as was the practice on many Japanese bikes back then. Perhaps the previous owner had it chrome plated? The fly in the ouintment for that theory is that the undercoating is still mostly intact on the underside of the fender! The undercoating would have been removed before plating, of course, or it would have contaminated the chrome bath. The fender now looks great, whatever it's made of!

Any thoughts?
