Bs-90 rectifier and oil injection
« on: March 22, 2020, 06:12:52 PM »
Hi guys is there anyway that u guys know of to test the rectifier on a bs-90 sport im starting to restore mine and ive been going through the electrical trying to figure whats good and whats not and i was wondering if the rectifier could be cleaned up and still be used or if it could be tested. Another thing is i have been mixing gas and i wanted to know if there was any way to tell if the oil pump works unfortunately i tried to hook mine up and broke the brass bolt that holds the tube on, but i think i might be able to fix it. If i do get it fixed is there anyway to tell if its working.

When you get it running using gas/oil mix, let it idle, hold the pump wide open and it should start to smoke heavily after a few mintues if it is working. Bleed the oil line feeding the pump before starting.

Download the parts manual to find the part number of the bolt, then try Richard Clark, owner of this forum for the banjo bolt. If he doesn't have one, someone on this forum probably does.

To check the rectifier, use an ohm meter.  Most have a diode check function; if not, just measure resistance, it should be infinite one direction and low in the 3-5 ohm range the other.

Marve:

The tail light bulb should be a 1157 type bulb, dual filament, and any auto parts store should have them.Cheap, too.

The 90 has a 6 volt system, the bulb should be an 1154, normally still available at your local auto parts store.

If you broke the oil supply banjo bolt and are not concerned about originality, there are plenty of them on Ebay. Not sure if the 90 uses the same size as the 350 (10mm x 1.25 pitch) but here's a link :-
      https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5x-Chrome-M10-x-1-25mm-Banjo-Bolt-brake-for-Honda-Kawasaki-Suzuki-Yamaha-BMW/252980389519?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3D1a15523e6cb34b0e98b17f01f6636ec2%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dag%26sd%3D160851053735%26itm%3D252980389519%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv5PairwiseWeb&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

Steel banjo will be stronger and less likley to break.
Unspoiled by progress.
I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s & 70s. I did so much stupid stuff and there's no record of it.............Anywhere !!

All right guys thanks for all the info, but do any of you guys know what the indicator lights in the dash are and i know oldswartout said to test for ohms but which way should the rectifier read infinite and which way should it read the 3-5 ohms of resistance.

Actually, the best way to test the rectifier is with  a test light and battery. It's unreliable to test those old rectifiers with a digital voltmeter.  Put the positive lead on the charging coil side of the rectifier and the negative on the battery side (brown). Light should come on. Reverse the leads, light should not come on. It boils down to current one way, none the other.  If defective, they can be replaced by a more modern diode.

If you haven't already, download the BS90 Technical manual and/or the 50-175 Service manual from this site.  Both have the full electrical schematic, and all the other info you'll need, also.

Oldswartout you wouldn’t happen to know what order the rectifier goes together because me being dumb a year ago took it apart and now i cant remember how to put it back together its pretty rusty as well so i was wondering if i could clean it up maybe or no. And my key switch doesn’t work so i have to directly wire some things and there is the two wires yellow and white which one is supposed to be the charging wire and which one powers the lights and stuff.

Oops! Can't help you. don't have one around and the last time I saw one was 55 years ago. Hopefully, someone else on here can post a photo.
