What's the deal?
« on: August 26, 2012, 11:19:35 AM »
Is it just my computer or does everyone have all these spam links in the forum? WalMart winner, get your college degree, etc. See what I mean?

Must be your computer, I'm not getting what you describe.

Sorry to hear that Coxy. Well, I found my problem after Moonpup helped me install a cleaner. It was somethin put in there by Arcade Candy. I cleaned it out and all the spam links in my forum pages are gone. ;D I wouldn't recommend visiting their website if you don't want a virus!

It's a "free" game website. Last week I got a virus and had to do a restore coached by HP as I still had a warranty. I was just surfin ebay when I was attacked. I'm always careful not to open suspicious email and don't bite on pop ups, never had a single problem since 1991 but I guess it can happen to anybody. I know now there is nothing wrong with the website here and was able to resolve the problem, evidently the perpetrator was trying to get me to buy a system restore from them and during hp's "fix" I had deactivated an anti virus program that allowed arcade candy to infiltrate my forum posts. Initially I thought something  was wrong with this site since it only occurred here. But, happy to say I was able to find and fix it. ;D Just waitin to see if Isaac is gonna delay the delivery of my shop building on Tuesday.

As long as you use a PC you will fight this forever. Next time you buy a computer get a Mac.

Thanks, Tom. I'll definitely keep that in mind. I lost all my pictures during the restore and that upsets me. I had a lot of photos of a disassembly on a current project. It'll take extra time to put this one back together.

Buy an external hard drive. 1 TB drives are available for $100 +/-.  Back up every 30 days, or more frequently.  It costs less than having someone fix your computer (unless it's under warranty).

BTW, the spammers and virus writers have been targeting MACs for the past several years.  If you rely on MAC's operating system to save your butt, you'll likely be just as much at risk as with a PC.  They also crash just like PCs, just ask my daughter.  :o

Thanks Karl, I believe I should get an external hard drive. Just like anything else, you don't realize what you had until you've lost it. I appreciate the advice.

I run these two free programs and have no such problems.

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download     I run this one about once or twice a month to clean the computer.

http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download?cha=ppc&sen=google&ste=avast%20free&var=13221759312&omcid=EN-GB_Search_Brand&gclid=CObHwPr_mbICFYYTfAod_S0AGg   This is my anti virus program, works well and is regularly updated.

I ran the ccleaner at the advice of Moonpup. It worked well. Will the avast antivirus download slow my computer? I was using AVG but it slowed my computer so bad I took it out, Within an hour I got the virus.

I too once used AVG and had no problems with loss of computer performance but the odd piece of malware did bleed through, I now use Avast after a recommendation from a computer geek and touch wood have had no viruses or infections of any kind, it does not slow down my Dell computer running Vista home premium.

If you find a program unsuitable then you can always un install it and try something else.
