Correct clutch spring tension?
« on: August 07, 2016, 08:11:22 AM »
I'm well into my reassembly of the 100 engine and wanted to know if anyone knew the correct tensioning for the clutch spring bolts?  The service manual I have doesn't seem to address it.

Thanks.

Hey CL-100,
The 5mm clutch set plate bolts?  The torque setting for the 5mm set plate bolts is 43-52 Inch/Pounds.  The spring tension is 17-19 pounds with a permissible limit of 15.5 pounds.  From the Bridgestone 90 Service Standards Manual.  Let me know if you need any other specs.  Good luck, Steve

The book doesn't identify which model clutch spring?  The Sports have different clutch springs.  This manual may have been printed before the Sport model was available?  There is no print date on it.  Hope this helps, Steve

Yes, I was asking about the 5mm set plate bolts.  I found a Clymer 50-200 service manual online and they identify the "fitting tension" for the bolts as 120 ft/in.

The 120 inch pound figure you refer to is misleading.   I think it relates to the total spring pressure applied to the clutch plates.   I.E. 6springs X 20lbs each gives 120 lbs    (possibly used a slightly stronger spring on the 100 ).

There is a bolt torque guide on page 87 of the Clymer manual (on this site) but it's a generic list giving 'safe' torque settings for any grade of bolt.  It suggests 30 - 42 inch pounds for 5mm bolts when converted from the ft pound figures shown.  Use the torque settings quoted by mqtsteve on your clutch.

I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s & 70s. I did so much stupid stuff and there's no record of it.............Anywhere !!

Thanks to all for the insight.  It is not intuitive to me that the 120 in lbs figure would be cumulative for all six springs/bolts.  I had decided that I'd go with the generic safe torque limits for 5mm bolts though.

New torque wrench in the mail so I'll be able to place the clutch cover on and move to piston/rings/cylinder, etc. soon.
