Matching Numbers?
« on: August 21, 2010, 11:54:20 AM »
I'm kind of a purist when it comes to restorations, so my question is... are there "matching numbers" when it comes to these bikes?

I know there are frame numbers and from what I've read-up so far on this site, I'm pretty sure there are engine numbers also. (sorry, it's been 30+ yrs. since I've owned one, so my memory is a little rusty!)

Are these 2 numbers "mated" up in any way? How would one tell if an engine is original to a particular bike? Or is that even possible?

Moonpup,

I'm not certain if any of the Bridgestones have exact matching frame/engine numbers.  My RS200 MII is only 1 digit off between the two and I remember speaking to Richard about this topic and he mentioned another bike out there with only 1-digit difference.  I would assess that if you have numbers that are close you would have an original factory mate; however, I suppose that it's not a certainty.  Maybe someone out there could shed some light on what the threshold would be.

Thanks Orion,

So I take it that there are no ID plates on the bikes that have both the engine and frame numbers on one plate.

So let's try a follow-up question.  Is there anything about the engine numbers on the 350's that would indicate that the engine was originally mated with either a GTR or a GTO? I would guess that a fairly low number would indicate it was a GTR engine as those had a much earlier run than the GTO's.

Other than that, is there any other way to tell?
