Carb sync 175 DT
« on: September 05, 2013, 11:26:45 PM »
For synchronizing the carburetors, the manual tells me to insert a special tool between the slide and the mixing chamber top and adjust the cable until the slide touches the bottom of the special tool. I am assuming this is with the throttle closed. Does anyone know what this distance equals? It looks like i could just use a caliper to set this if i knew the dimension of the "special tool"
anyone?
thanks

It's difficult to do with calipers.  The special tool is a partial cylinder that keeps the slide square with the mixing chamber top, otherwise it will hang lopsided and be impossible to measure accurately. With the carbs assembled, I've used an appropriately sized drill bit inserted into the carb throat under the slide to adjust the cables to provide a similar amount of clearance/drag on each side.

That makes sense. I've done similar on the RD400. Can you tell me what size bit would get it close? i'm guessing the tool is a cylinder with a slot to clear the cables/spring, Anyone happen to know the dimensions? I think i could fab something if i knew the distance.
Thanks much

I use a 29 or 30 drill bit for idle and a 1/2" rod for adjusting the throttle slide cables for when the throttles are open. This works well for me and is quick and easy.

Thanks for the response Doug. Just so I am clear, you are making the throttle slide 1/2" from the mixing chamber top with the twist grip at full throttle?
Thanks

I used 1/2" round bar because it was convenient and available. I opened the throttle, with the friction lock on, until the 1/2" rod would slide between the throttle slide cut out and the bottom of the carb bore and then adjust the other side to match (with the cable adjuster on top of the carb).
