petcock

Well i have started working on the 175. I actually got it running the other day with just filling the carbs. Only ran on one cylinder unless i cover the right side carb a bit. But my main question is about the petcock. it was very pluged (why i had to fill the carbs), so i soaked it and took it all apart. Behind the lever it was full of brown stuff. Was either a very bad gasket of some sort or just dried gas. it came out in chunks. Can someone tell me if this was a gasket? I am guessing it would have needed 3 holes in it so that the gas would flow. Is that correct? Can i make one out of some rubber?
