175 Front wheel mounting
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:47:21 AM »
Ok, what am I doing wrong. I thought I had a speedo problem after replacing the front wheel to replace the front wheel, but maybe it is an alignment problem. The speedo is driven by a nylon/plastic disk with 2 raised nubs, that mates with 2 slots on the hub near the wheel bearings. I can watch in assy. and be very careful to mate these parts up, but I must be something wrong. The speedo will work for about 200 feet, then start to skip and finally stop real soon. Both the plastic disk nubs and the hub with the wheel slots, appear to be in good shape. Maybe I am not putting enough tension on the axle nut, after securing the pinch bolt on the front axle. Any ideas on how to make this work or what I am doing wrong. I had thought of removing the plastic disk and mating it to the hub first, but I can't seem to remove that disk unless I remove the seal first. Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Are you sure its not the speedo itself? You could try taking the cable off the speedo and going for a ride to see if you can see the inner cable spinning. Check your cable also, maybe it broke and just catching for a while. Or spin the cable from the bottom with a drill and see if it turns the speedo.

Yes, I am sure the speedo and cable are good. I checked the easiest first. I took the wheel apart for the 3rd time and it appears as if the nylon gear that drives the cable, may have a problem. The gear itself is good, but there are those 2 nubs that are to engage the front wheel on the one edge of that gear. These nubs appear to be splayed out and not getting a good grip on the wheel hub to drive the gear. So I took it out and placed a hose clamp around it to see if they were splayed outward and they are. I took a hose clamp and snugged it around the gear including the nubs to "encourage" them to come in. Then out came the propane torch and I carefully heated the hose clamp so that the pressure against the gear and nubs would bring those nubs in. It did, but I had to come in the house for a little bit and though the bike is working on the work bench, a trial run down the road has not happened yet. But it will soon!

It seems that you might be tighting in the incorrect order.Put the wheel on lineing up the nubs with the speedo drive .Thread the axel in until it bottoms out.Tighten the axel with a wrench about 1/2 turn more. Then tighten the axel pinch bolt.(The bolt on the fork leg) You should be good to go...Good luck ,Jimmy 90k
