Newbie with questions on grandpas BS-100
« on: June 10, 2011, 12:27:17 PM »
Hello all,

I am new here and have some questions regarding a BS-100 I got from my grandpa.
A little history first. My grandpa was a Rupp dealer for quite a while and sold this BS-100 new, and later took it back in as a trade in. It has been sitting in his shop until about 2 years ago when we cleaned it out, and I took the bike home. I have some free time and would love to get this machine going. Gramps said it didn't run when he took it in on trade, and thought it may need new points. He couldn't remember the year of the bike.

The metal tag attached to the frame under seat says:
Model Number: BS-100/T(01)
Serial Number: 22A000799

On the engine it says: 20E006628

I am hoping someone can help answer a few questions I have.
First what model of BS-100 is this? I have just started to research this and I am confused as to what model this actually is.Is it trail bike?
Is it street legal?
Any Idea what year this may be?
Are there any good service manuals, and wiring diagrams floating around for this? The wiring on this bike seems to have been rigged up, and some wires are loose, including all the wires in the headlight.
Any advice other advice you can give a new guy who is trying to restore this pretty machine.

Thanks for any help you can give.
Ron

I have attached some photos of the bike I took last night.

Hi, Ron,

Your Grandpa's bike is a 100 Trail. This was only built for a short period in 1968 before being suprceded by the 100 TMX. The only real differences were that the TMX had a heavy duty rear luggage rack as standard and came with full off-road "knobbly" tires, as opposed to the less extreme Trail tires on teh 100 Trail. For the purist, the 100 TMXl had silver painted headlamp shell, fork top covers and rear shock top covers. On the 100 Trail, these were all pianted in main body colour - either Candy redlike yours, or Candy Blue.

The BS100 engine was simply a BS90 Oil Injection bike with a big bore top end, so a BS90 Shop manual will serve very well for working on the engine. There is no specific manual for the BS100.

The cycle parts on the 100 trail are quite conventional so if you have some experience in working on bikes you shouldn't have too much trouble. The forks are mofified BS60 Sport, the wheels and brakes are straight BS60 Sport, the fuel tank is BS90 Sport, teh oil tank is BS175/200.

A BS90/BS100 parts manual is available for downloadng from this site, along with a BS100GP/TMX supplement which should cover all the tubular framed 100cc models.

As far as I know it was  fully street legal in the States (it was never sold here in the UK, buit it is fully street legal here).

I hope that helps. Check out the pic of my TMX in the Gallery to give some idea of what the bike looks like when it's complete.

Graham Weeks.

Graham,

Thanks for the reply. You really helped to clear some things up for me, especially the difference between the TMX and Trail bikes.
I got some parts ordered for this yesterday and I'm really looking forward to try and bring this bike back from the dead.

Thanks again,
Ron

One other quick question about the model number.

I am assuming that on the parts manual I would look under the 100 TR category for the Trail version. Is this correct?
That is what I was confused about, being that the model number on mine is BS-100/t and not tr.
I would also assume that the 100SP is sport, but what would the TMX model be listed under on the parts manual?

yes, you are right . My Rockford parts book does say "100TR" where it means the 100 Trail, but doesn't include the specific TMX parts. Most of the 100 trail parts are also used on the TMX, but the supplementary parts book details those parts which were new for the 100TMX and the 100G/P (the low-pipe and dualseat roadster model)

The 100 Sport was a pressed steel framed model - basically a BS90 Sport withe a different seat - so unless the parts are explicitly shown as applicable to the 100 Trail, they won't fit.

The 100cc Bridgestones are nippy and great fun to ride - I love mine to bits. You'll enjoy it!

Thanks for the info.

I'm hoping to get new points and condenser on this weekend and see if I can get some spark, if I can find the time.
