It lives! The good and the bad....
« on: March 20, 2011, 05:07:51 PM »
Got the 175 to start up yesterday.

Good news is that it fires up on the first kick and idles nicely.

Bad news is that there is some oil leaking from the right side carb cover....it's looks like its actually leaking out from behind the carb where it attaches to the rotary valve cover.  Looks like the oil I put in the transmission, not the two-stroke oil.

Any idea what is causing this?  Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

sounds suspiciously like the "O"ring that seals the carb spigot to the rightand cover.

That's kind of what I was thinking, but wanted to get some other opinions.  I think #31 on the attachment might be the culprit.

After reading other posts on here about crank seals being bad, it got me kind of worried.

Think I'll start there and see what happens.

Attached are some pics of when I got it the 175, how far I took it down, and what it looks like now.

Thanks for the help!

I would replace that seal number 31 and check out the seal on the rotary valve cover number 30.
Thanks.
Steve.

Are you sure its transmission oil? I think the only way trans oil is going to blow past those seals 30 and 31 is if it gets into your crankcase first.

Definately transmission oil...not premix.  I think Steve and BSMechanic are right....I'm going to try to get a couple new O-ring seals from Richard and see if that takes care of it.  Thanks for the help guys!

My road racer doesn't seal well around the rotary valve spigot where it comes through the side cover behind the right carb and will leak transmission oil into the carb cavity. The side cover is a stock one ground out to fit over the larger racer rotary valve and the casting doesn't cover the o-ring well.  To fix the problem, after assembly, I just wash down the area with brake cleaner, then use my finger to smear some automotive RTV into the gap between the spigot and side cover.  Works like a charm. That would save you having to remove the clutch cover and possibly replacing the gasket.

Thanks for the tip Karl.

One other thing I've noticed is a couple drips of black oil coming from the rubber muffler joint between the head pipe and the muffler on the left side.  It's not a ton but several drips if I leave it running and let it sit for awhile.  I think it may just be due to the fact that I didn't replace the rubber muffler joints but reused the old ones which weren't cracked but were very hard.  Does this sound reasonable or could there be a bigger problem?  Thanks!

The oil coming from a muffler joint is not unusual.  New rubber joints will help.  Also when you've got it running well and take longer trips without so much idling, it'll keep itself burned out without a chance to accumulate enough to drip although it may still get a little oily unless you've got good rubber seals.
