Title: blowing main fuse once running
Post by: hardy on November 05, 2016, 10:04:25 PM
Hi Guys,

I have an issue where the bike blows the main fuse when it is running for a few seconds, or when the bike is rocked. I am yet to rip and tear it apart, but as the bike has the original wiring harness am sure it has rubbed through somewhere.

So question is, are there any common wear points for the harness? I sure around the steering head where wires move will be a common one?

Any other hints? 8)

I would think that the "rats nest" of wires in the headlight bucket might warrant a peek...  ;D

Also check wiring to the coils under the tank, and around the rectifier. Could be a faulty rectifier.
This type of fault can take some finding, I hope you get lucky.

I pulled one out of the muffler when it was first received so anything is possible! I think it will just be a cause of start with the basics and move forward...

does the fuse blow when you turn the key to the on position for the headlight?

No not at all. Fuse is fine in any position until the bike is kick started. Any thoughts Coxy?

I had that problem when I first got my GTR running and found insulation missing on the connection from the rear brake switch that was touching the oil tank. I got lucky and found it fairly quickly......Rod

Funny you should mention it, I fixed this fault on day one of ownership lol

I've found the offending wire. It was in the wiring loom where it went through the bottom of the headlight bucket. There was no rubber grommet, so it had rubbed through.

New Gromit ordered, will be on the road again before Xmas! ;D
