Knocking front end?
« on: March 31, 2015, 10:49:04 AM »
I am almost ready to get the bike through it's test and apply for an age related registration number.

On checking the bike over it knocks from the front end when the brake is applied and the forks compressed and released. I have checked the steering head bearings and adjusted them correctly, so they should be fine. The only other thing I can think of would be the fork bushes but they are new and the forks have been rebuilt.

Am I missing something or is a knock normal?

Thanks.

???...just a couple of thougths. Are the fork sliders bottomed and tight in the upper bridge? Are the clamps in the lower bridge cinched down tight so the sliders can't move? May be neither of these, but worth a look.

Oil? 220cc per leg as indicated in handbook.

Or it could be one or two of the cables passing through the front mudguard loop slapping?

Hmmm, thanks Bert and Lee. I will check everything out again tomorrow. It's not the cables Ziggy, it's a distinct metallic knock so I will check everything again.

Forks are filled with the correct amount of oil and the stearing bearings have been replaced with new chromed .25 inch balls. Tightened until they just bind then slackened off a touch until the forks drop from side to side. Top and bottom yolk bolts are tight, as is the steering stem top nut. My have to remove the forks and check for side play in the bushes or sliders if I can't find any other reason.

Did you check. That the tubes are straight by rolling on a piece of glass.was there any accident damage before restoration ? I have had bikes knock after A accident and from a broken spring also a worn bush

Hmmm,

I feel a bit of a pl**ker now. I hadn't tightened up the front hub torque arm so it knocked when the brakes were applied!  :-[

Don't stress about it. At least it was a cheap fix! At the worse, you won't do it again!

It's a good thing you heard the noise and figured out the problem.  Applying the brakes after the torque arm bolt has vibrated and fallen out has some pretty exciting consequences.
