Chrome fork shrouds - assembly tip.
« on: August 08, 2013, 06:06:53 PM »
Hi All,
Following a discussion with a colleague it struck me this info could be posted to assist all GTR owners. Those nice shiny fork shrouds, the ones you have just had rechromed. THEY CAN AND WILL VIBRATE AND FRET TOGETHER WHERE THEY OVERLAP CAUSING CORROSION TO START. If yours don't overlap, the bottoms ones are upside down, they should.  So, while you've got the fork crown off, try sliding a 4mm ring of bicycle inner tube down into the gap between the two shrouds , should keep them nicely centred and insulated from each other. Alternatively, if you don't fancy stripping the forks, 4 small squares of any suitable material (thin plastic tub lid ?) should be equally effective with maybe a smear of silicon grease to aid pushing them down and provide further corrosion resistance.. Give it a try.

I'm so glad I grew up in the 60s & 70s. I did so much stupid stuff and there's no record of it.............Anywhere !!

Hmm overlap, well this i never noticed when i stripped the bike, but thanks for that I will be putting the forks back together as soon as I get all my stuff back from the chrome platers, hopefully in about the next few weeks, will take on board the tip with the inner tube as well, I do have some thin neoprene but maybe not thin enough.
Regards Colin.
