cleaning out rusty cruddy tanks
« on: November 28, 2013, 10:52:30 PM »
Just wanted to share A great way to clean out your rusty cruddy gas tank .I did this with my BMW r 100 RT I bought the POR 15 tank repair kit .I then purchased a bag of aquarium gravel for a fish aquarium .I purchased a rubber freeze plug or the likes .   plumbers also use something like this too. Plug where the gas cap goes I plug off the gas line nipples with solvent proof lines with small hose clamp and bolt for plug .Pour in gravel and marine clean that comes with the kit seal off tank .Here comes the good part I used my wifes dryer as a huge tumbler .I placed pillows and used bungee cords to center the tank in the center of the dryer and turned it on and let it tumble .The tank is to be secured inside the center of the dryer . In other words you dont want the tank tumbling around in the dryer you want the gravel tumbling in the tank .The gravel inside the tank along with the marine clean made my tanks come out looking so good I almost didn't want to use the POR 15 sealer they give you but I did and it came out the best Ive ever seen .The tumbling in the dryer is the trick .Ive not shared this with nobody except here .I plan on doing this to my tank on my newly acquired homer tank .Now my wife isn't a nag and dosnt mess with me to much but you might want to make damn sure your tank is sealed good .My beemer tank came out beautiful with no problems .Getting the inside of a tank clean and rust free can be next to impossible but this method works with the dryer doing all the work .Hope someone can benefit from this .The kit came with (marine clean) (Metal ready) and sealer .The sealer amount that comes in the kit seams like its not enough but it is. You may want to get extra.

 scoot, I think I remember seeing some utube videos of that method before. What size bag of aquarium gravel did you use and how long did you have to leave it in the dryer?

BTW: without pictures..... it didn't happen!  ;D

If I remember I did it for a couple hours and checked it then did it couple more hours . The bag of aquarium gravel I used was a small bag maybe 5# I didn't want the tank so full of gravel and solution I wanted it to tumble inside the tank more than float around I thought about using BB,s but thought they might get lodged in the gas line tank nipples.There were some pretty tight spots inside the tank so I wanted something small enough to get into the nooks and crannys BB,s probably would work pretty good .But depending on size of tank you would want to use more or less.It tumbles inside the tank better if you place the tank horizontal not vertical.Back of the tank to the back of the dryer.front of the tank to the front of the dryer

Hi all,

You can also use a cement mixer, that way you don't run the risk of upsetting the wife.

I used hot water, dawn detergent, and some nuts and bolts and then afterwards used EVAPORUST and it came out nice and shiny! Check out the "HOW TO" section of this forum and see the before and after pictures.

Or you could take a week and build one of these;

Gotta do a lot of tanks before it pays back the week though!

The indexer is a very cool touch. No rust will escape that baby!

btw, not that I'm biased, but the video would be wayyyyy better with a Bridgestone tank!
