engine tear down
« on: April 15, 2012, 07:07:25 PM »
So I have the engine torn down this far.

I'm a little scared to split the cases and deal with the transmission. Should I be?

Not 100% sure what I'm getting myself into.  I don't have any reason to suspect transmission problems but no evidence of it working well either.

Any suggestions appreciated!

There-s nothing really to getr scared about with the Bridgestone singles - they are really simple engines to work on, and anyone with normal workshop tools and the appropriate manual should be able to strip and rebuild the bottom end, even if it's their first look inside a motor. The only "special" tool you'll need is a puller for the magneto flywheel, but check out a recent thread in "90/100 talk" on making a suitable puller - that'll at least show you what the tool looks like.

The motor and gearbox are very sturdy, but having got the engine stripped down to the crankcase it would be a shame not to have a peek inside, just to check that nothing is amiss. It would also give you a chance to replace oil seals and main bearings, which may have some surface corrosion from the engine's long lay-up.

Richard should be able to supply any parts you need. Give it a go - you might be pleasantly surprised!.

Graham,

Thanks for the response! Exactly what I wanted to hear actually. I'll follow up this weekend with what I find.

Cheers.
