175 float height
« on: October 02, 2025, 01:01:23 PM »
I have a standard VM17-18 carb with what I think is a standard brass float and standard float valve and needle .  I'm trying to set the float height . The Clymer manual says it should be 23/32 inches or 18.26 mm.  The problem is there is no possibility of setting the float height this high (even with the needle removed completely to check).
The original height when I bought the bike and dismantled the carb was about 24 mm which feels about right . Can anyone comment on what is happening here . I like to go by the book but that simply isn't possible unless I replaced the float with something bigger.

Yep, something is wrong in that manual.
I have a very low mileage, unmolested & unrestored (so not running) 175HS.
The float height is 22mm and I'm certain I am the first person to take the float bowls off since this bike left the Factory.

Because of the geometry of the float & valve arrangement you can't change this figure much anyway.
Which is a good design approach by Mikuni and probably why they don't specify a dimension for it.
Perhaps the Clymer manual's author meant to write 23mm & not 23/32"?

Thanks for the reply. Odd isn't it that no one else has commented on the manual figures in the past. I wonder if Bridgestone changed the float and forget to tell anyone !  I think I'll go 23mm and see if that works.
