Engine rebuild
« on: January 14, 2015, 09:53:47 PM »
I have pulled the engine apart on my 175dt, as the was oil getting from the gear box into the crank case.
While it is apart  Is there anything I should do?
I was thinking of changing the needle bearings in the Pistons and crank as well as the bearings in the crank.
I am doing piston rings. And will replace all gaskets.

Any tips on how to disassemble the crank to change the bearings?
I did have a grinding noise at idle that disappeared as soon as you increased revs,  told it was possibly the timing gear? So I will change that as well.
Is there anything else I should do while it is apart?

Hi,

The grinding noise sounds exactly like a worn fibre idler in the drive to the generator. If you have a selection of gears, fit the one that gives the least amount of backlash between crank and generator. If you can track down a new gear, even better.

Stripping the crank to replace big ends and centre ain bearing needs a press to split and some care in reassembling an aligning. Not a job I've ever tackled but it is standard practice ion rebuilding two-stroke cranks, so there should be no shortage of specialists
pout there to help. Try asking around at your local bike dealers.
