Am I Missing A Part? (Right Carb Cover Grommet)
« on: January 03, 2014, 11:22:03 AM »
I'm pretty sure a rubber plug of some sort goes in this notched area of the right hand carb cover, but my GTO doesn't have one and the parts manual doesn't show one, at least that I can see.  ???

What goes there and does anyone have a part number for it?

Thanks.

Edit: Changed the title to make future searches easier.  ;D

My '71 GTR has the same notched area. And i am in the same situation as you moonpup, i do not know also if there is something that goes there, however, i was not overly concerned because from what i have seen/studied up on i never saw any pictures/info that would imply that there is a rubber type seal/plug that goes there. Hopefully someone can fill us in if there is something there, but for now i am not too concerned. I am sure it is there for a reason ( just not sure why). ???  .. bsforever

Moonpup/bsforever, there is a rubber part that goes in this spot. It was still in place on the parts bike I bought last year. I remember thinking, "Wow, that's what goes there!" Since it was very valuable, I put it in a safe place...
translation - I can't find it right now...   ;D
I will post a pic when it turns up.
It is not listed in my parts manuals or shown in the picture of the clutch cover, but I'm sure you've been down that path already...

Thanks guys, I knew something went in there, just couldn't find it in the parts manual. I'm wondering now if it's like the rubber wiring plugs on the underside of the speedo & tach that also aren't in the manual, but are just part of the complete units themselves. Was it only included with new covers?

Would also be interesting to know if others of these have survived. Since they weren't offered as a standard replacement and would be easily lost (was missing on my first GTR) there may be very few. I love this motorcycle archeology stuff...

Slawsonb ....thanks for the pic and lucky you found it. Now we can find some rubber and carve it out for ourselves that do not have it. Moonpup good going on the inquiry, i was going to leave mine without anything on there since there was no info that there was originally anything there to begin with. Now we know  :)

Just let me know if you need other views of the part to help with the fab.

Hey Guys, I got a hold of Richard before he closed for the day and he thinks he has these in stock. He didn't have the part number handy but was going to have someone look for them and get back to me.

I guess we'll know soon if they're available.....  ;D

Also, I wonder how many other parts like this aren't shown or listed in the parts manual.

There are two I know of that aren't listed but I suspect are part of the wiring harness. They are both rubber grommets, with the first one being where the tail light wires go thru the back of the rear fender and the second is the one that goes in the hole nearest the bottom of the headlight bucket.

Guess I need to ask Richard if he has those as well.  :o

Getting from Richard is a much better option than fabbing yourself. Thanks Moonpup...
On your last question, wonder if there's any way to know what other parts are "off the menu"...(sounds like In and Out Burger)...
 ;)
These could have been dealer only parts, wonder if anyone has any manuals/other docs that would list these parts...

Hi. Folks,

These rubbers were part of the the final modification tio the clutch inner plate and clutch centre. They might have muffed some of the clutch plate rattle (though I rather doubt it), but I think their main purpose was just to indicate that the clutch had been modified at the factory (or the field mod kit had been fitted). Early GTRs came from the factory without theserubber plugs. If you fit one, be careful if you remove the carb cover for servicing. These rubbers drop out quite easily once the cover is off and you may not notice unless you specifically check when refitting the cover.

There is a Rockford Dealer service letter detailing the clutch mods and giving part numbers, but I can't get to it at the moment.

Service Letter BSG0061, Date 10-20-67

BS350 GTR Clutch

2195-9010 Carburetor cover grommet

The grommet was suppose to eliminate objectionable
clutch noise.

Well.... that explains that!   8)  Thank you Graham & Randy.

When I worked on Datsun 240Z's, the factory service manual was known to have numerous errors through out it and I thought that was probably the case here. It appears, that I may need to pay a little bit more attention to Bridgestone's Service Letters!  ;D

Again, thank you guys for taking the time to fill in the rest of the story.

My GTR has one, it's been dropped, lost and found a number of times over the last 40+ years and 40K miles, but I do still have it. Very surprising   :o
