Title: Steering head ball bearings
Post by: TMX_Maverick on May 05, 2022, 01:59:43 PM
I recently got a quote for some new steering head ball bearings, from an outfit with some NOS parts.
But in the quote, they said... "Ball Bearing Set 0611-0316 ? discontinued, replaced by 0611-0732.. $1.00 which is a 7/32 ball bearing vs 3/16. Also, these are sold individually, not as a set."

What size ball bearing SHOULD be in the steering head? I would think going 1/32" LARGER than stock on the ball diameter would be a problem (whereas going smaller would still fit within the radiused groove on the races).

Also, how many balls are supposed to be in the upper and lower races?

Thanks!

It would be helpful to know what bike your referring to - Common size is 3/16 (23 each upper & 23 each lower). 7/32 should fit. The bearing races are pretty generous for space. You could reduce one (1) ball bearing each should the spacing be snug ..

Post your application so we can make an exact determination ..

Good call, Kevin --
I recently rejoined the forum (with my old username) after my membership lapsed. I forgot that my Bridgestone model (1970 BS100 TMX) was no longer in my signature. Thanks for pointing that out, and for your response.
