D.I.Y Soda Blaster
« on: June 23, 2014, 02:37:11 PM »
Found this a while back and it looks like a good inexpensive set-up for blasting the aluminum bits on our bikes like carbs & such. I'm gonna have to try it out when I get some time.

diy soda blasting will only be a cheap alternative if you already have a good compressor .you will need a 5.5hp compressor minimum or you just run out of puff .

If you are doing any soda blasting do it outside because it gets everywhere do not do it in you workshop even on a small job.

Both my brother and I have the Harbor Freight blast cabinets.  He's used soda in his with good results, but I've not tried it.  It would be a PITA to change media to soda and back again for a small job, though.  I like the idea of the DIY setup for small jobs.  Does anyone know how many boxes of soda it takes for a single carburetor or cover?

Karl, when you go to the link I provided and scroll down near the bottom, there's another link to a video that shows some guys blasting a brake part off one of their bikes. They also talk about the cost of the set-up, where they bought the soda and how much they used.

To quote...... "The parts we bought to make our system only ran to about US$15 at the most – that included a 5kg (12lb) bucket of baking soda, best purchased from an oriental foods supermarket."  In the video, they said they used about 1/3 of the soda to blast the part.

Here's a link to the video....  http://www.garagenight.tv/diy-soda-blasting-build-your-own-rig-cheap/
