Description: This one isn't mine, it belongs to a good friend. It was based on a shabby 1971 GTR, and retains the original Bridgestone engine with only external cosmetic mods. The swinging arm and bottom half of the frame is original Bridgestone, but the frame toprails have been heavily modified to resemble the 250cc Works Yamaha twin (model RD56), as ridden in the 1964 and 1965 Grand Prix series by Phil Read and Mike Duff. The front brake is a double-sided, twin Leading show Grimeca unit, the front forks are modified TD Yamaha, and the tank and seat are hand made one-offs. The bike also has a fairing, (not shown in the picture) made from a mould taken from a genuine RD56 fairing that was crash-damaged in the UK by Bill Ivy in 1965.

The bike's not original, but it shows what you can do with a tatty 350, a bit of imagination, and lots of hard work. Believe me, it sounds a treat at 9000 rpm on those open expansion boxes!

(The original RD56 simply blew away the previously all-conquering Honda Fours to win the 250cc World Championship in 1964. For the 1965 season, Honda retaliated with the legendary Six-cylinder 250, forcing Yamaha to develop their 250 Vee-fours for 1966)
