Removing rust/pitting from chrome
« on: August 08, 2014, 11:36:49 AM »
I just bought a 350 GTR rear fender that is in really good condition. It has some very minor pitting that I would like to address. I have seen reference here to using aluminum foil and water (and elbow grease) to remove the rust. I can't remember who posted, so I thought I'd just throw the questions out there.
Can someone describe this approach in more detail?
Is the foil just the abrasive used to dislodge the rust?
Does this cause any damage to the remaining chrome?
Any other approaches or suggestions are of interest as well.

Will appreciate the help as usual.

I've always had good results with simple green, a brass brush, and a little water. Dissolves the rust away and doesn't scratch the chrome at all. Try it!

Bert,
I understand removing rust and pitting from chrome, but Shelby plating 317 398 7040 are very reasonable i just don't bother anymore.
Just send the parts off and i work on other parts of the motorcycle until the chrome parts are back in at one time we chromed the
Bottom legs on the GTR it looked great.
Thanks.
Steve.

Thanks Steve. I'm lucky to have a local plater who is very good. This particular fender is good enough that I wanted to try to bring it back. I am actually at the point where I am contemplating building 2 GTRs (have enough parts). 1 with high finish parts and one more original. This fender would be on the original. I have one to plate. Too many decisions (and GTR's) too little time (and money).  ;D

Honestly, I have not used the guy in Tucson for bike parts (Chevy car and truck bits), so given Shelby's familiarity with these BS parts, they may have an advantage. I'll ponder this a bit.

I did a 260 mile round trip yesterday taking my parts to be re chromed, yes there are platers nearer but this company is good, quick and reasonably priced.

Hello Ziggy i was just wondering what parts you got plated what condition were they in and how much did they cost to get done. I would like to get some of the 175 parts done but my budget is getting tighter as i realse how much getting  it up and running again is going to cost.
Regards
Bill

I saw a video on utube where a guy used 4-aught (0000) steel wool. I watched another video where the guy used Marvel Mystery oil.!!  ... Tim ("ddog71")   :)

Even the very fine stee wool will scratch & dull the chrome. I would be exremely careful. I have also used copper wool type scrubby pads that I got at the grocery store. That didn't scratch.
