I have been spending time cleaning up and understanding the basic (lights) wiring on my new 1966 HS 175 but every time I glance down on this rectifier setup I know I will have to address it soon.
The bike will run but I haven't pursued running it until I tie-up several loose ends, so i'm not sure but think that the bike will keep the the battery charged. This rectifier setup with no heat sink looks sketchy at best to me.

This is a first for me. I have never seen a rectifier like you have.

That's cool. It looks like something I would have done back in the 70's if the original failed; buy some diodes from Radio Shack and a few terminals and the bike is back up and running.

I know very little about this part of the electrics but my research seems to point to the 175 as having a three-phase AC generator that has five wires used to operate it - negative, positive & three wires from the generator.
Would this work as a replacement:

That should work and give you the benefit of a regulator also, which the 175/200 doesn't have. You would want to check charging voltage while running to see if the regulator works OK. I may look into one of those for my GTR, which is currently using a similar part from an 80's Kawasaki.

Like Karl I bought a six wire, rectifier/regulator, Kawasaki type unit which I found was too big to be easily accommodated on the GTR. I hadn't realised that I could have used one of these 5 wire units which look to be much more compact. I assume the voltage regulator function is totally contained within the unit and doesn't need a separate voltage sensing wire, IE, sixth wire.
Hankgood, thanks for posting, you may have given GTR/GTO owners a low cost, simple solution to replacing their now dubious rectifier/regulators.
Karl, be very interested to hear if the 5 wire unit can be used on the GTR. Brian.

I received the eBay rectifier yesterday with no documentation or specs. Spent a good bit of time online trying to figure out what is inside the device but there are many variations of these. Most seem to be replacements for Chinese scooters.
What i'm wondering is if this thing is really a 3-phase rectifier. Some online discussions talk about a "sensing wire" and many of the scooters have a single phase generator.
This unit has five wires: Red / Green - I believe these are Positive / Negative. Black / Pink / Yellow i'm not sure.
Two questions: 1) Before installing, can I test with a multimeter to see if the three wires are diodes?
2) What harm can I cause if I wire assuming the 3 replace the 3 feed wires on the original BS rectifier?

I googled GY6 wiring diagrams when you first posted but was unable to find a 5 wire rectifier/regulator diagram. 4 & 6 wire yes but no 5s !!

I think you have a 3 phase unit. Try running a test as the video assuming the red & black wires are the +ve and -ve battery connections. If it all checks out - fine. If not, try the same test using the red and green wires. The test meter shouldn't do any damage. Once you are happy which wires are the battery connections, any of the remaining 3 wires can be connected to any of the alternator output wires. The colours aren't important as the outputs are all the same. Let us know how you go on.

I tested the unit and only get a reading (4.5 good) on the pink and yellow leads - the black reads open lead. The green lead is the negative.
So I guess the I will shop some more and look for one with three leads all the same color.

I received mine yesterday, it looks exactly like yours and it doesn't check correctly either. With the negative lead on the black wire, I do get a reading from the black wire to one other, but not two others as it should be. The other colors all check OK, but with inconsistent values. It appears the red and green are positive and negative, but one bad connection to the black.

Based on the measurement checks I made on the unit I received, that makes sense. Darn, wrong one! I, too, was hoping for a more compact rectifier/regulator combined unit.

The search continues.................... this was my solution to replacing a suspect rectifier on the GTO.

Then bought a small piece of heat sink, cut it in half, to make two of these. Brian.

Fits in place of the original BS unit with a bonus that it creates more space in the 'abyss' to sort out, reroute and make better sense of the wiring under the seat. You may not believe this from the photo.

If all else fails, you could always buy one these kits although I'm not sure British imperial smoke would work on our bikes. Japanese metric smoke might be different !! :D ;D :D :-\

Well the mess is cleaned up.
This is the Amazon $10 unit installed. It was bigger than I thought it would be but fit nicely. Not sure if it is working but will know soon as I move forward to the carb tuning.

That looks very good.
I'm still chasing the rectifier/regulator combination. I ordered a "Voltage Regulator Rectifier for Suzuki GN 125 250 5 wires Motorcycle ATV" from ebay. The rectifier does check correctly for a 3 phase alternator. The Suzuki GN250 alternator is rated at 200W, so the BS alternators won't be able overload it. I'll get it mounted and checked out sometime soon.

Hi, I was wondering if you have tried a Shindengen SH775 reg rec. Non shunting, easy on old charging systems. single or 3 phase.

I haven't tried that regulator/rectifier, but it looks like it would be good one to try.
The GN250 replacement I mentioned in my previous post has worked well all summer, although that's only about 600 miles use.

I'm using this rectifier as well. I believe I got it back in the radio shack days but it is working.
