Ugliest Engine?
« on: June 29, 2012, 02:51:41 PM »
After a bit of cruising on the net, came across one of these on craigslist. I'd seen them before, but it just reminded me of how much I disliked the looks of this engine. It's a Harley Davidson 350 SS Sprint engine.

There are others I'm not real fond of either, but I thought I'd see which ones some of y'all disliked.  ;D

I always kind of liked the Sprint engine. At least you can see it. I don't like the bikes that have the motor covered in plastic and you can't see the engine at all. I never like Lawn Boys either.... ;D

Sprints are cool lookin. They had a look of their own. I'm with Tom, ugly is coverin the engine with PLASTIC. I would consider this an ugly engine for a bike.

Well, that one is definitely worse than the Sprint, but they both stick out like a sore thumb to me. Kinda like a big schnoozola just hanging out there. They're like the Jimmy Durante of engines!  ;D

Yes the Hercules isn't the prettiest bike and was a poor seller when first released but as with many others it has now become quite collectable with the rarer pre mix models demanding slightly larger sums of money over the later oil pump models.

I acquired an RE-5 so I'm with Ziggy over at the RE-5 forum, but the RE-5 is kind of a plumber's nightmare. It grows on you though and the rest of the bike is pretty good looking if you ask me, especially the '76.

If you've ever seen a Panther up close and live, it's kinda like a giant Sprint. I've always wanted one of those too.

Yeah the RE5 was massively over engineered compared to the Hercules and I agree that the 76 'A' model is the better looker of the two, until recently I had an example of both models but I let the 'A' model go as my U.K. 'M' model is the more collectable.

Still very rare though.

What's a giant Sprint?

I think the Hercules looks like a PREGNANT Sprint. :) Anyway I like ugly bikes as long as they have original motorcycle motors. Just don't like plastic coverin them. But coverin up the engine isn't a new thing

I'd love to have one of those. Of course I had a few beers today. Just poured the four corner footings for my shop. Perty HOT outside.
Gatorade and a few bud lights will cloud your thinkin. :)
