1st Gear

Spent winter and part of summer getting my dad's old 100 running. Everything is there and works, but skips first gear. The shifting pattern is N-2-3-4-N-N-2-3-etc. In other words, after 4th gear, it goes into neutral, then the next shift (which should be first) does not engage until 2nd gear. A shop looked at it and said the gear is there and looks okay, but is not engaging. Any tips?

I have a question for you, have been into the motor for any work etc.
And if so have the crankcases been split to get into the gearbox.

Steve - sorry for the slow response. Yes, the bike sat for years and the bearings on the starter crank rusted. I took it to a shop and they split the case to replace the bearings. With it skipping first, I took it to a different shop - they confirmed the gear was there and looked okay, but it's not grabbing.
