Pin holed GTR gas tank soldered.
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: I've seen this before on petrol tanks, it's when a small amount of water is left in the tank for many years, it rusts the lowest point and creates pin holes that in time would become a much bigger problem.

What I've done here is to solder the holes as I needed to clean the inside free of rust using a cheap supermarket Coke and toilet cleaner mixture filled to the brim. Left for eight days the mixture removes the rust, the next step is to rinse it out then dry the inside with a heat gun.

Now I can grind the solder down to the metal ready for re chroming. Once re chromed I can add POR 15 tank sealant to seal any porosity and contain rust development.

Z, Thanks for that. I'll have a word with a local industrial chromer and see what he says about ding filling.

Brian, I used ordinary soft solder as used on electrical contacts, I knew this could be chrome plated as I soldered my petcock external screw in place on the tank in my last restoration and they chromed over it no problem, I think electrical solder is made from copper and tin anyway and that can be chromed.
I had to fill the pin holes as I wanted to remove the rust inside using toilet cleaner and coke at 1:3 mix before re chroming, as it was the mixture would have leaked. I have ground the solder back to the tank.
If the solder partially comes out during chroming preparation then that's no problem as I'll be lining the inside with POR 15 tank sealant.
I tried but failed to fill a ding using the solder as it wouldn't stick, I know it can be done using lead but I don't know if you can chrome over lead?

Z,
When you say solder is that ordinary soft solder or silver solder. Can it be used to fill a small ding that will be chromed later? Is it affected by the chroming prep?
Lack experience, Brian.
