GTR side cover emblem
« on: November 13, 2019, 01:18:03 PM »
I've been unsuccessful in searching the forum for an answer to this.
Can anyone tell me how to set the original hollow brass rivets on the side cover emblem?
It would be easy to use spiral rivets or normal AN rivets, but I want it  to be original.
I've been a aircraft mechanic for many years and have pounded thousands of rivets, but these have me baffled.
cheers,
Skinny

I ground the end of a 1/4" bolt to make a hollow rivet setting tool. It takes two people to use, one to hold the cover, emblem and rivet flat on a solid surface (hard plastic or soft aluminum), and the other to use the tool and a hammer to set the rivet. It may not look as good on the  back side as the factory, but no one will see it on the inside.

there is also a tool made for setting rivets in aluminum window frames.  it is nothing more than a specialized punch with a little nib on the end.  they are available on  (I don't wanna say it) amazon for a few bucks.   Old Swartout's looks to be effective and being self reliant is always a plus.

This is my first post, as I've recently begun a GTR 350 project. Regarding the badge, for retaining the rivets, I used 2mm push nuts, using a 4mm 12-point socket to do the pushing. As I had buy 200 to get three, I have some leftovers. If anyone's interested, I'll certainly post some to you.   Regards, Chase

That's a cool idea, didn't know they made them that small. I bought a bag of hundreds of the rivets, just to get a half dozen or so to remove and re-attach emblems for paint, etc. What's a few hundred extra push nuts.  ::)
