Carb disassembly on the BS 50
« on: March 19, 2012, 02:44:54 PM »
Hi all,

I suspect that I am missing something really obvious and/or that I am being really stupid but does anyone know of a reason why I can't disconnect the choke (starter plunger) cable from the carburetor? I undo the screw and the whole of the brass fitting is free but the spring inside will not willingly slide out. It feels like it's snagged on something and I'm afraid of really forcing it and damaging the spring (and anything else it might be snagged on.) Am I missing something? Looking at the exploded diagram I can't see anything else that should be causing it. I've tried holding the choke lever in different positions to see if that would make a difference but it doesn't.

The carb on the BS-50 is the Amal Mikuni 15mm if that's important. Hope someone can shed some light.

Thanks.

The choke slide is brass and you can get corrosion from that and the carb, try penetrating oil or parafin and leave to soak for a while

It took a lot of force and soaking to finally get that little brass choke guy out on my BS7.

I find that a bit of heat works well. I use a heat gun.

Hi, again.

Yes, a soak in WD-40 (or similar penetrating oil) and good helping of patience should do it. Try the heating trick, but don't go mad at it with a blowtorch - the carb is made of zinc alloy and a good blast with the flame could melt things.

If you can get to the inner cable with a pair of pliers, a good tug may release the plunger after it's been soaked for a while.

Thanks Graham, and thanks guys! The carb is currently soaking in WD-40. I'll hold off on the blow torch for now (didn't know we'd be meeting again so soon) but plenty other stuff to do meanwhile.

Question. Does the carb choke fix like this after standing for decades or could it have been the reason for the engine seizing in the first place? Just wondering.

Thanks for all your responses. Much appreciated.

From what I have found many of the chokes get stuck like this. I don't think it was a factor in the engine seizing.

on my 175 i got a tiny jewelers blade screw driver slid it down the spring into the top of the plunger where the cable goes in and twisted it and it came free also had it soaking for 2weeks in wd40 .i was not worried about any damage as everything was getting replaced but there was none

Coxy, thanks for that. That sounds like a good idea, too. The carb is soaking in WD-40 as I write. The rest of the carb is so clean and has come apart so easily I'm hopeful it will give sooner than later.

Hope your second job doesn't keep you away from the 'stones for too long. On the plus side it might cure your insomnia  :)

Thanks for posting.
