Title: Muffler re-plating
Post by: Kenneth Pagel on August 22, 2020, 10:57:52 AM
I recently sent out my two GTR header pipes and one muffler for re-plating. I had the parts "hot dipped" at a local machine shop to remove the carbon, but some still remained. The chrome shop I sent the parts  to said they could remove the carbon that is left, and then re-chrome them. The parts are in good shape: header pipes have no rust or pitting, and the muffler has just a bit of rust on the end, inside section, so not too much prep by the chromer would be needed to re-chrome these parts. The problem is their heart-stopping quote: $675, plus shipping. I've seen threads on the forum where individuals had a muffler re-chromed at around $200, or so. I understand many chromers will not touch used muffler's/exhaust parts for fear of contamination of the chroming baths, but there must be someone else out there that'll tackle this  for much less than I was quoted? Thanks in advance!
