Putting Turn Signals on a 175 Dual Twin
« on: June 25, 2010, 02:33:14 PM »
Hey all,

I've seen some photos of 175 Dual Twins that have had turn signals installed.  Just wondering if Bridgestone ever made turn signal kits for their bikes or if what I have seen has been an aftermarket add-on.  Wonder how hard it would be to put turn signals on and get them wired in correctly.  Just wondering if anyone has done this...thanks!

Re turn signals/indicators/blinkers on BS 175 DTs - I can confirm that models that were imported into Australia in 1967/68 were sold with blinkers - whether they were fitted before they left Japan or not, it is hard to confirm.  McCulloch (the chainsaw company) were the importers of BS bikes at that time in the State of New South Wales (NSW) - maybe they might have some further information.  In addition, the BS 100 Sport I bought in 1968 came with 6V blinkers and the 1967 BS 90M and 1966 BS 50 Sport which I recently acquired came with blinkers.  I also am under the impression that bikes sold in Japan came with blinkers.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Orion,

Haven't really got into the turn signal issue yet, still finishing up final adjustments and getting wheels rebuilt.  Just thought it was something I might tackle in the future and wanted to see if anyone else had gotten into this issue.  Saw a post on CL where a guy was parting out an old 175 that had what he said was original turn signals.  They were pretty cruddy looking and he wanted $25 each.  When I get to that point, I'll probably look into an aftermarket solution if I can find one that looks good on the 175.

O.k.

I think if it could be done both functionally and aesthetically proper, it could be helpful.  It's become obvious to me that people around my area generally don't get hand signals.  On the other hand, if you buy a used car here there's a good chance the turn signal lever and bulbs are good as new... they don't get turn signals either!

After I sent you the link, he apparently changed his ad, cuz when I first saw it, he pretty much just said..."parting out". Thought maybe you could haggle with the guy and get everything (including switch, wiring, etc.) for a decent price.

I did take note of the condition of the signals but they did appear to be original. I guess you've got to ask yourself, how bad do I want signals, do they have to be original BS stock and are they NLA. If the answer is "yes" to these, I would've jumped on them.

Good info Dave, thanks for your help.

I just never knew if there were actual Bridgestone signal kits or if the photos I'd seen of a few 175's with signals were aftermarket kits.  I'd be interested to see some detailed photos of the handlebar switch and signals if anyone has some good pics.  This isn't something I plan on doing anytime soon, just a thought for the future, because as Orion pointed out....a lot of people just don't get the hand signals.

Thanks again!

Paul
