1971 BS 200 SS MkII Sportshift Shaft Problem
« on: February 01, 2021, 07:28:04 PM »
Before I put the engine halves back together I would like to know if there is something that is supposed to fit inside the groove on the black plastic collar at the base of the sportshift shaft (see picture). There is a plastic cap with internal contacts and external wires that fits over this suggesting that there should something metallic in this groove to interact with the contacts in the cap. Thanks, Jeff

On page 8 of the parts manual you will see the neutral change plate, part number 25, that
fits in the groove and makes contact with the neutral change case.

It has to be installed so the contact points make contact. If not your
neutral ight will not work.

Good luck.

Randy

Hey Randy, I found the little metal piece that goes in there. It appears to be copper, has a couple dimples in it and the ends are bent a little. How does it fit on this shaft? Does it just sit over the groove? Do the bent tabs on the ends go down into the groove? Unfortunately its not clear to me by just playing with it and I didnt see it come apart.   Jeff

The copper strip with the dimples fits in the groove. The dimples are the contact
points that make contact with the switch. The contact strip must line up with the
cover switch points to make contact and energize the neutral light. I did this not to long
ago. It may take you a few tries before you get the points line up. If you go to gallery
and look for 175 - 200's you will find a few photos of the way the copper strip fits into the slot.

Im attempting to make the copper neutral change plate .my bike had a broken sports shifter shaft and the copper plate was lost.my question is which terminals are the 2 dimples on the copper plate suposed to line up with on the neutral case.the case has 3 terminals marked 4 ,5 and 1 unmarked.does it come into play when in 4 speed rotary or 5 return change.thanks in advance for any replies
