Tail light unit
« on: May 08, 2013, 12:40:40 PM »
Hi,
Have any of you kind gentlemen taken the chrome backing plate off the tail light unit, after pulling it to bits to have it re-plated I don't see how to remove the bulb holder and don't want to force it , at this point painting it silver is not on the radar for me so I'm open to suggestions.
Colin.

Hi Colin,
If I remember correctly I popped it out with very minimal pressure.  I then re-installed it with some two part epoxy.  Make sure you only put the epoxy around the outer edge.  You want to have metal to metal contact of the two parts.
Hope this helped.

Hi Steve,
Thank you for answering quickly but I have another daft question.
Would that be push it from the back ? , it has a flared edge on the front where the bulb fits in, it's the only one I have so I don't want to break it.
Regards Colin.

Again, if I remember correctly, when you pull it out, the flared part will distort enough for it to be pulled out. You will be able to push it back in..... it will be very snug, but it will go.   Hope this helps.

I'll just add that I went the same way as Steve and had to run a thin bead of epoxy round the inner center to get it to fit back together without risk of it vibrating loose, I also needed a separate earth wire for the tail light to work, this I hid neatly inside the tail housing.
