HS 175 Neutral Switch Parts

Acquired a new Neutral Change Case (1767-8000). Mine was broken in half. After removing the old part I found the Neutral Change Plate (1768-8000 - a small, copper split ring with two contact points pressed into it) was bent and distorted but was able to reshape it to what looks like normal.

I can't figure out how the copper ring is held in place. There is a slot (maybe 300 degrees around) in the rubber seal (?) that the Switch Case fits over and the copper ring seems to fit into the slot but I don't see how the ring could provide contact as it has no tension to press it outward. The parts manual shows no other parts.

Hope this make sense to anyone that has worked with this switch before.

Maybe you have wrong parts, there are a few different ones for the 175-200 bikes, depending on serial number.  over the years who knows what might have been changed. Jeff Bar

I believe the copper ring is supposed to be bent into a circle large enough to fit snugly in the plastic case and provide tension for the contacts that way, just not so tight it won't rotate with the shaft.  It's been a long time since I had one of these apart, though.

If that is the case I think my copper ring has been damaged - I had to reform it a bit. It was all pretty nasty around the switches from years of chain lube being deposited on them.

I did find a work-around that will work for me running in 5-speed mode all of the time. The switch I noted above is for switching the Neutral Light function between 4-speed rotary and 5-speed return - it's on that shaft. I took that switch out of the circuit and ran the yellow/green wire from the main harness directly to #5 terminal on the Neutral Switch Case (1761-8001). I suppose that the #4 & #5 terminal markings on that switch case are for 4 & 5 speed mode.

 I haven't road tested yet but seems to work fine in the 5-speed return setting when I run it through the gears in the shop.
