Also do I need to have a battery in it to make both coils spark?

Check the resistance of the coils and gap of the points. That's where I would start also check if your getting power at all.

Yes you need a good condition 12V battery as its battery ignition, do not connect a car or any other large battery to the system.
Get the correct 12V battery. Hope this helps

I hooked up a 2 amp charger to it and kicked it one time it sparked. I ordered the battery today from NAPA for 29.95 and it will be here tomorrow. Got the battery number off this site also. Thanks Richard

got the battery and put it in, it fired right up and is running on both cylinders, that put a smile on my face. Thanks for the fix.

I remember back when I was riding a T500 on a daily basis if the battery was down it would run on one cylinder until about 3,000 rpm and then there was enough juice to fire both cylinders. This would continue until the battery came closer to full charge.  My guess is that the B/S being a very similar setup would do the same thing.

I just went through the same experience as the OP. My 350 hasn't ran in years - not sure how long, the guy I got it from never got it running...

No spark on the right side (amazed that the bike runs pretty well on one cylinder..). Replaced coil with new - no help. After reading the above, checked battery - it checked at 12.6 volts, so not the issue.
On a whim, I swapped spark plugs, and the right side fired and ran - actually sounded better than the left. So, maybe an easy check will save someone some headaches...

So, I guess I need a set of plugs...
